The Image of Nursing at Sackville Memorial Hospital

Sackville Memorial Hospital is located in beautiful Sackville, New Brunswick, a charming university town filled with friendly people, lots of character and a small-town feel. The hospital, which serves the residents of Sackville and surrounding area, has the same warm and friendly atmosphere.

This is the second largest facility in South-East Regional Health Authority's multidisciplinary network of hospitals, health centres, services and programs that are helping to lead the way in health promotion and education.

Quotes

"You know the patients better (in a smaller hospital setting)—a lot of them are older people who come in frequently and you know their idiosyncrasies and you are able to deal with them that way. They notice you everywhere and are always happy to see you."
–Marilyn Goodwin, RN

"At a smaller hospital, like Sackville Memorial Hospital, nurses are able to get their work done and socialize with the patients as well and really get to know them."
–Tina Hall, RN

"Because it is a university town we get to see a lot of university patients—that helps the mother in me, and it helps them too because they need some mothering sometimes."
–Brenda Levesque, RN

"Sackville Memorial Hospital offers the ability to get to know everybody because of the small departments."
–Beth Jessome, RN

"The LPN’s role is changing fast and we are able to practice within our scope at Sackville Memorial Hospital."
–Brenda MacDonald, LPN

Smaller Hospital Benefits
Smaller hospitals provide nurses with an opportunity to really get to know the patients, something that is rare at a larger facility. In Sackville, nurses often see their past patients while running errands in town.

Nurses are able to experience their career on a more personal level at a smaller hospital, and this is evident at Sackville Memorial Hospital. Employees describe the working atmosphere as family oriented where you know everyone on a first name basis, from housekeeping and dietary health care workers to doctors and nurses.

The experience nurses gain at a smaller facility is insurmountable because they work throughout the building on the inpatient unit, in emergency and/or with clinics, for example. Sackville Memorial Hospital sees a large variety of diseases and illnesses that offers nurses the opportunity to use different skills on a daily basis.

Here, you not only see it, but you get to do it, which provides nurses with the opportunity to keep their many skills constantly updated.
