About Us

Port Elgin and Region Health Centre is part of South-East Regional Health Authority's multidisciplinary network of hospitals, health centres, services and programs leading the way in health promotion and education. The centre serves the residents of the Village of Port Elgin, located in southeastern New Brunswick, and the surrounding area.

The centre first opened its doors in December 2001, and based on community need, services have increased from three days a week to four.

Port Elgin and Region Health Centre focuses on community and population health with a goal to provide coordinated and integrated primary health care. The centre offers physician services one half day on varying days every one to two weeks for patients without a family physician, laboratory services on Wednesday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and nursing services, such as injections, blood pressure checks or dressing changes.

In efforts to maintain and enhance community health, the centre provides numerous educational and support programs including blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol teaching and follow-up, diabetic health teaching, healthy eating and healthy weight programs and Well Woman/Well Man clinics. The "Losin' It" group formed in 2003 after the community expressed a need for a weight loss support program and together the 20 members have lost more than 300 pounds. The centre also works closely with the school system offering programs such as nutrition education, walking groups, a "Smoke Free" program and diabetes education.

In spring of 2005, Port Elgin and Region Health Centre initiated a community step program with the goal of helping people increase the physical activity in their daily routine, step by step.

The centre holds an annual health fair for the community with the support of other service providers. Booths offer everything from bone density studies and blood pressure/sugar checks to discussions with a variety of providers on topics including nutrition, foot care or addictions/mental health. A children's health fair provides youth with opportunities to learn about nutrition, safety in the home, the roles of the RCMP, ambulance and fire department, pet care, handwashing and sexual health.

Mission
Our role is to work in partnership with the community, to offer the people in the community the skills and resources they need to improve their health, and to build a healthy community.
