Social workers work to create social and environmental conditions to enhance quality of life and to develop the full potential of each individual, group and community they work with. The social worker is specially trained to take into account all of the factors that impact upon the emotional and physical health and well-being of individuals and families.
Social work practice includes the belief that the social, cultural and economic lives of individuals and families are directly linked to emotional and physical health. The social worker’s focus remains outside of the traditional medical model.
The social worker’s role is varied and complex. We use a client-centered approach to build on the strengths and resources of individuals, families and communities. Social workers believe in the intrinsic worth and dignity of every human being and they are committed to the values of acceptance, self-determination and respect of individuality. We value interdisciplinary teamwork, collaborative practice and community-based partnerships.
The social worker’s main focus and work are based on a holistic approach to health. The client/family is at the centre of the intervention plan which is developed by including all aspects of the client/family’s life and environment. These are generally the overall factors that will be assessed by the social worker depending on the client/family’s situation:

Social workers at South-East Regional Health Authority work with the following client-based populations and their families:
- Pediatric populations
- Expecting mothers, newly delivered mothers
- Mental health clients
- Troubled teens
- Cancer clients
- Palliative care clients
- HIV clients
- Clients with neurological issues
- Burn, surgical clients
- Cardiac clients
- Clients with rehabilitation issues/adapting to a new or chronic diagnosis
- Diabetic clients
- Geriatric clients
- Clients with general health problems
- Clients with substance and/or gambling abuse issues
- Clients with limited family/absence of social supports
- Clients dealing with homelessness
- Clients dealing with poverty/lack of financial supports/unemployment
- Clients living in family violence situations
- When there are difficult family dynamics
- When there are indications of caregiver burnout/fatigue

Referrals may be made by patients/clients, family members, friends, a physician, a member of the interdisciplinary health care team and community agencies.
All social workers within South-East Regional Health Authority are registered members of the Canadian and New Brunswick Association of Social Workers and follow the code of ethics set by the Canadian Association of Social Workers. We provide placements for Bachelors and Masters of Social Work students.
Social Work Services’ main office is situated on the ground floor (West Lane entrance) of The Moncton Hospital. South-East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) employs approximately 28 social workers at The Moncton Hospital, Sackville Memorial Hospital, the Extra-Mural Program and Addiction Services. Social Work Services has been serving individuals, families, interdisciplinary health care teams and communities since 1964.
Our goal is to provide the highest standard of social work practice to individuals, families, groups and communities to improve the quality of life for the people we serve, in collaboration with internal and external partners.
